Yep, you read that right!

Have you ever tried knitting with toilet roll? OK, so it’s not quite actual knitting, but it is what I would call French knitting. You might have seen it before with the little wooden doll with a wire crown. I had one when I was growing up.

This is a really easy make and a great craft to do with the kids. I reckon from about 6+ could easily do this. I made a necklace with mine.

You will need:

  • Toilet Roll Tube
  • Wool
  • 4 x wooden lollypop sticks
  • Sticky tape
  • Scissors

What to do:

  • Tape you lolly pop sticks to you toilet roll tube, so that they are evenly spaced around the tube – if you only have two then cut them in half (it may also help you to number them)
  • Unravel your wool so that you have about 10 inches of wool and place the stand inside the toilet roll so that you have about 5 inches hanging out the bottom of the tube
  • Wrap your wool around one stick clockwise and then wrap round stick 2, 3 and 4 and bring your wool to the front of stick 1 – when looking down the tube you should have a little square
  • Keep your wool placed in front of stick one holding it above the previously looped wool. Now lift the previous round over the wool and off stick 1. You have now done your first stitch.
  • Repeat step 4 on stick 2, 3 & 4 – you have now knitted your first round.
  • Repeat step 4 & 5 until you have your desired length. You knitting will come out as a cord at the bottom of the toilet roll tube.
  • When you have reached your desired length finish the round on stick 4, cut your wool at the top of the toilet roll, leaving about 6 inches of wool free.
  • Bring your wool round to the front of stick one and feed up and under the stitch on the stick (see photo) repeat this on all 4 sticks.
  • Gently pull off your wool off all the sticks and pull your length of wool tight.
  • You can then tie off your two ends to make your necklace
